This Valentine's Day, Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt's much-awaited film 'Gully Boy' hits the theatre and we bring to you the first review of the film here. Story: 22-year-old boy Murad (Ranveer Singh) is a son of a driver who lives in a match-box size Mumbai tenement, with his younger brother, mother and a grandmother. His abusive father (Vijay Raaz) brings  home a second wife, not much older than Murad. The only ray of light in his life is his madly-possessive girlfriend Safeena (Alia Bhatt). His parents worked hard to get him educated so that he could have a white collar job. Meanwhile, Murad realizes his calling to be a rapper. His life changes when he bumps into amateur rapper Shrikant or MC Sher (Siddhant Chaturvedi) at a college fest. And from there starts the journey of an underdog street rapper to an extraordinary star Gully Boy.
Review: Helmed by Zoya Akhtar the movie is much more about the lead actor Ranveer Singh's journey from being the quintessential slumdog to an ambitious rapper named Gully Boy. It's about chasing your dream no matter what, never giving up when life becomes hard, love, friendship and ambition and relationships. And my first reaction after watching the film was is there anything Ranveer Singh can't do? Well the answer is NO! From a ruthless king Allauddin Khilji in 'Padmaavat' to a tough cop in 'Simmba' and now a shy Gully Boy Ranveer once again proves that he is an actor par excellence!
There's a dialouge in the film “Agar duniya mein sab comfortable hote toh rap kaun karta?” and that's the insight of the film, breaking all the odds how Ranveer chases his dreams is the essence of the film that is beautifully portrayed on screen. Rap is an unconventional genre of music in India, and even those who don’t associate with this form of music, will be able to appreciate the heartfelt story. Zoya Akhtar has beautifully worked on the human complexities in Gully Boy and the movie will surely be counted amongst her best work till date.
The stellar dialogues by Vijay Maurya add depth to the narrative. The story and screenplay by Reema Kagti and Zoya scores high, has flair and beautiful touches on the edges. There's a line in the film where MC Sher(Siddhant Chaturvedi) tells Murad, ‘Tere andar toofan hai’ and Ranveer so lives up to this line, every time he appears on screen he simply lits it up. Murad’s journey has some fantastic moments, be it his love life or his own struggle, it keeps you hooked. Coming to the other stars, Alia Bhatt as possessive girlfriend Safeena is just brilliant. In her small yet impactful role, the actress brings effortless ease into the fiery eccentricities of her character. She plays the girl who wants to be someone through education, and simply win hearts with her lingo like ‘mere boy friend ke saath gulu gulu karegi’ toh dhoptengi na'. She is endearing, to say the least. This is one of her best performances and everyone's gonna fall in love with her. The chemistry between Ranveer and Alia is super cute. Special mention to actor Siddhant Chaturvedi, who makes his Bollywood debut and makes his presence felt on screen in front of the dynamic Ranveer Singh. Siddhant plays the role of MC Sher who kind of changes Ranveer's life and pushes him hard to become the best rapper of Mumbai. He looks so effortless in the film and stands tall with Ranveer Singh, his performance is so natural that many might confuse him for a real-life rapper. Other supporting actors in the movie like Kalki Koechlin and Vijay Raaz are also superb in their respective roles and leave an impact when you leave the theatre. Music: Music of the film is bang on is the essence of the film. The rap battles shown in the film are riveting and an inspired piece of writing. The soundtrack is composed, and performed by a myriad of Indian musicians, MCs, and producers, such as Divine, Naezy, Sez on the beat, Rishi Rich, Dub Sharma, Jasleen Royal, Ace, Ishq Bector, MC Altaf, MC TodFod, 100 RBH, Maharya, Noxious D, Viveick Rajagopalan, and others. You are going to listen 'Apna Time Aayega' on loop as the song crooned by Ranveer himself is both inspiring and foot tapping. Overall it won't be wrong to say 'Entertainment bahut hard hai' and Ranveer Singh ka time definitely aa gaya!
