Rename Agra to 'Agravan' or 'Agrawal': BJP MLA writes to UP CM Yogi Adityanath

Joining the name-changing bandwagon, another BJP leader has demanded Yogi to change the name of Agra to ‘Agravan’ or ‘Agrawal’.

New Delhi: After Uttar Pradesh chief minister Adityanath renamed Allahabad and Faizabad district to Prayagraj and Ayodhya respectively, there is a growing clamour to change the names of more cities. Joining the name-changing bandwagon, another BJP leader has demanded Yogi to change the name of Agra to ‘Agravan’ or ‘Agrawal’. In his letter to the CM, Jagan Prasad Garg, a BJP MLA from Agra's Northern Assembly, has asked the former to change the name of the city. MLA Jagan Prasad Garg is a five-time legislator from Agra's Northern Assembly. According to him, Agra has no meaning. "You check the name Agra anywhere, what relevance does it have?" he asked. Quoting the history, the BJP MLA's place said that Agra used to be the Agravan at the first. However, later Mughal rulers changed it to Akbarabad and later to Agra. Earlier there used to be a lot of forests here and people from the Agarwal community used to live here. However, when the Mughals came here, they renamed the place. So the name should be Agra-van or Agra-wal, Garg said. "About 5,000 years back the place was called Agravan, so it should be named that again. Most people from the Agrawal community live here. Agra word has no meaning, doesn't make sense. I will meet CM over this and request for the same," Jagan Prasad Garg told ANI. Besides, he has also asked to rename the railway station in Agra named after Bilochpura. According to Garg, its name should also be changed and it should be done in the name of Central.
