Bypoll Results: Congress hits a ton in Rajasthan by winning Ramgarh seat; JJP workers hurl stones at a counting centre in Haryana's Jind

Background

By Poll Results LIVE: After trailing in the early hours of counting, the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) managed to establish a comfortable lead over Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) candidate Digvijay Singh Chautala in the Jind assembly seat in Haryana. After 9 rounds of counting, BJP candidate Krishna Middha was seen leading with 37561  votes. JJP was trailing behind with 25325 votes while Congress' Randeep Singh Surjewala was on the third spot with 15776 votes. In a setback for main opposition Indian National Lok Dal, which held the seat, its candidate Umed Singh Redhu was trailing at fourth spot. The JJP has put its weight behind Digvijay Singh Chautala, the younger son of jailed leader Ajay Singh Chautala, who broke away from the INLD and floated the party last month.

On the other hand, Congress candidate Shafia Zubair won the Ramgarh assembly poll in Rajasthan by defeating her nearest BJP rival Sukhwant Singh by a margin of 12,228 votes.  With this, Congress's tally has risen to 100 in the 200-member Rajasthan assembly. Congress has the support of one RLD MLA.

Zubair got 44.77 per cent votes by securing 83,311 votes while Singh secured 71,083 votes, the officials of the Rajasthan election department reportedly said.

BSP candidate and former union minister Natwar Singh's Son, Jagat Singh, was on third spot. He secured 24,856 votes, they said.

In total, 20 candidates contested the Ramgarh election on January 28.

The election was necessitated due to the death of a BSP candidate ahead of December 7 Rajasthan elections.
