Bulandshahr violence: Youth's family refuses to conduct last rites, demands compensation

The family of the youth, who was killed on Monday in the violence that erupted in Uttar Pradesh's Bulandshahr, has refused to conduct his final rites until the state government assures monetary compensation and job for a family member.

BULANDSHAHR: The family of the youth, who was killed on Monday in the violence that erupted in Uttar Pradesh's Bulandshahr, has refused to conduct his final rites until the state government assures monetary compensation and job for a family member. A police inspector and a youth, Sumit, were killed as a mob protesting over illegal cow slaughter went on a rampage torching a police post and clashing with police, which opened fire. Sumit suffered bullet injury in shots fired by unidentified assailants and succumbed to his injuries. The family members demanded a compensation of Rs 50 Lakh and police job for his brother from the Uttar Pradesh government. Sumit Kumar's father Amarjeet Singh, 55, also demanded state funeral to his son as was accorded to Inspector Subodh Kumar, who was also killed in the mob violence Monday. Sumit's (20) body arrived at his home in Chingravathi around 2.30 pm amid heavy police security. Bulandshahr MP Bhola Singh and local MLA Devendra Lodhi are also present. "We are on protest. We will not cremate the body until the government gives us a written assurance that it would grant us Rs 50 lakh compensation, pension and a job in the police department to Sumit's elder brother Vineet," Amarjeet Kumar told reporters. Vineet alleged delay in the post-mortem leading to a delay in bringing the body to the home. "There was no arrangement for us. For post-mortem, we had to wait from yesterday evening till today...We could leave Meerut for home with the body only after 1 pm today (Tuesday)," he said. Police have lodged an FIR against over two dozen people for rioting and murder. As many as 27 people have been named in the FIR, registered early Tuesday morning while cases have been lodged against 50 to 60 unidentified people, police said.
