Syria to sign Paris climate agreement, leaving US isolated

London [UK], November 8 (ANI): Syria has decided to sign the Paris agreement on climate change, leaving the United States as the only country in the world outside the deal.

The war-torn Middle East nation made the announcement in Bonn, Germany at the COP 23 UN climate summit, reported the Independent.

Earlier, Syria and Nicaragua were the only two nations outside the 195-nation pact that was signed in 2015.

Nicaragua, the Central American country, signed up for the agreement last month in October.

Meanwhile, the French Government has said that U.S. President Donald Trump had not been invited to climate summit in Paris which is scheduled to take place in December.

The summit will witness the presence of more than 100 countries.

According to the reports, Trump, in June, announced that the US would begin the process to withdraw from the agreement, purporting that it imposes "draconian financial and economic burdens ... on our country" and should be "renegotiated."

In October, when asked about Nicaragua's decision to sign, a White House spokesperson affirmed that the Trump administration intends to pull out. "As the president previously stated, the United States is withdrawing unless we can re-enter on terms that are more favorable for our country," the statement said.

The Paris climate agreement aims to respond to the global climate change threat by keeping a global temperature rise this century well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. (ANI)
