PoK's J&K Assembly condemns US decision to blacklist Hizbul Mujahideen

Muzaffarabad [Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir], Aug 29 (ANI): The Jammu and Kashmir (JK) Legislative Assembly in Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) has condemned the recent decision of United States to blacklist Hizbul Mujahideen (HM).

Assembly member Abdul Rasheed Turabi tabled the resolution condemning the US decision of blacklisting Hizbul Mujahideen which was unanimously adopted.

Pakistan Today quoted the resolution as saying that Hizbul Mujahideen is an indigenous organisation representing sentiments and aspirations of the Kashmiri people for their right to self-determination.

According to the report, the resolution also condemned US decision to term HM chief Syed Sallahudin as a terrorist.

The Assembly also urged the US government to revise its decision about sanctions on Hizbul Mujahideen and play a decisive role in bringing durable peace in South Asia.

The Assembly is a self-governing administrative division under the control of Pakistan but not constitutionally a part of the country.

The U.S. Department of State had recently designated Hizbul Mujahideen as a foreign terrorist organization under section 219 of the Immigration and Nationality Act.

"These designations seek to deny HM the resources it needs to carry out terrorist attacks. Among other consequences, all of HM's property and interests in property subject to U.S. jurisdiction are blocked, and U.S. persons are generally prohibited from engaging in any transactions with the group," said a statement by U.S. State Department.

"Today's action notifies the U.S. public and the international community that HM is a terrorist organization. Terrorism designations expose and isolate organizations and individuals, and deny them access to the U.S. financial system. Moreover, designations can assist the law enforcement activities of U.S. agencies and other governments," it added.

Formed in 1989, Hizbul Mujahideen is one of the largest and oldest militant groups operating in Kashmir.

Hizbul Mujahideen is led by Specially Designated Global Terrorist Mohammad Yusuf Shah, also known as Syed Salahuddin.

Hizbul Mujahideen has claimed responsibility for several attacks, including the April 2014, explosives attack in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, which injured 17 people.

Earlier on June 26th, the U.S. Department of State designated Salahuddin, as a 'Specially Designated Global Terrorist'.

"Department of State has designated Mohammad Yusuf Shah, also known as (AKA) Syed Salahuddin, as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT) under Section 1(b) of Executive Order (E.O.) 13224, which imposes sanctions on foreign persons who have committed, or pose a significant risk of committing, acts of terrorism that threaten the security of U.S. nationals or the national security, foreign policy, or economy of the United States. As a consequence of this designation, U.S. persons are generally prohibited from engaging in transactions with Salahuddin and all of Salahuddin's property and interests in property subject to United States jurisdiction are blocked," the State Department said in a statement.

Salahuddin is the senior leader of the militant group Hizbul Mujahideen. In September, 2016, Salahuddin vowed to block any peaceful resolution to the Kashmir conflict, threatened to train more Kashmiri suicide bombers, and vowed to turn the Kashmir valley "into a graveyard for Indian forces."

Under Salahuddin's tenure as senior Hizbul leader, the terror outfit has claimed responsibility for several attacks, including the April 2014 explosives attack in Jammu and Kashmir, which injured 17 people. (ANI)
