Pak Senate passes resolution against law aiding Nawaj Sharif

Islamabad [Pakistan], Oct 12 (ANI): The Senate of Pakistan has passed a resolution against a law that had allowed a disqualified person (Nawaj Sharif) to become an office-bearer of a political party.

The resolution, presented by Leader of the Opposition in the Senate Aitzaz Ahsan, stated that a person, who is not eligible to become a member of the Parliament or has been disqualified, cannot lead any political party, Geo News reported.

The step was taken against the law that made it possible for former prime minister Nawaz Sharif to get elected as President of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).

Earlier this month, Pakistan President Mamnoon Hussain had ratified the Elections Bill 2017 commonly known as Electoral Reforms Bill, paving way for the disqualified politicians to hold a public office or to lead a political party.

The resolution was passed in the Senate with 52 people voted in favour of the resolution while 28 voted against it.

Opposing the resolution, Pakistan's Law Minister Zahid Hamid said the issue had been debated when the bill was passed and the president had also signed the bill after Parliament adopted it, it had become law now. (ANI)
