One suspect in Barcelona 'terror attack' found dead in car

Barcelona [Spain], August 18 (ANI): One of the suspects involved in Barcelona attack has been found dead in a car three kilometers from where police officers tried to stop him by firing at the vehicle he was in, reports El Pais.

However, police are not sure if he committed suicide or was shot down in police firing.

The terrorist organisation Islamic State (ISIS) has claimed responsibility for the attack, which killed at least 13 persons and left around 80 persons injured after a van crashed into a crowd of people in Barcelona's Las Ramblas district.

Before ISIS claimed responsibility, Police were treating it as a terrorist attack and had arrested two men behind the incident.

Senior police official has said that two suspects arrested in Barcelona van attack are Spanish nationals from Melilla and Moroccan.

As per media reports, a Catalan government official has confirmed death of 13 persons in the incident on Twitter.

One of the victims of the attack is a Belgian national, Belgium's deputy prime minister Didier Reynders confirmed on Twitter.

Political leaders from around the world have condemned the attack and extended their support to Spain.

US President Donald Trump tweeted, "The United States condemns the terror attack in Barcelona, Spain, and will do whatever is necessary to help. Be tough & strong, we love you!"

A message of support has also been put out from the official Twitter account of the office of UK Prime Minister Theresa May.

"My thoughts are with the victims of today's terrible attack in Barcelona.and the emergency services responding to this ongoing incident. The UK stands with Spain against terror," May tweeted.

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj has confirmed that there is no report of any Indian casualty in the attack. Indians, who are in an emergency, can contact the Indian embassy in Spain at +34-608769335.

"I am in constant touch with Indian Embassy in Spain. As of now, there is no report of an Indian casualty," Swaraj tweeted.

Meanwhile, police in Barcelona have asked people around that region to stay indoors. They have urged those concerned about friends and family to use social media, rather than cellphone calls to avoid overloading phone networks.

Facebook has also activated its safety check mechanism, allowing users near #Barcelona attack to mark themselves as safe. (ANI)
