Indian behind pro-ISIS account, intelligence agencies seek details

New Delhi: One of the most influential social media supporters of the Islamic State is an Indian based in Bangalore, according to report of Channel 4 News, a leading British news channel.

The man, known as Shami Witness on twitter, is actually an executive working with an Indian conglomerate in Bangalore.  While the channel refused to divulge his full name, he was identified as Mehdi by them.

His twitter account @ShamiWitness had over 17,700 followers. He acted as a counduit for sharing information between supporters and recruiters of the jihadist group. The account has been deactivated since the Channel 4 report came to light.

Following these revelations, intelligence agencies have contacted the Indian High Commission in Britain for further details, sources said.

Interlligence sources also revealed that the Indian High Commission will request Channel 4 and the British authorities for details about the man identified as Mehdi and the @ShamiWitness twitter account.
