Melbourne: Former England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff has revealed the biggest mistake he had committed in the sledging department during his playing days.
The 38-year-old is in Australia commentating on this season’s 20/20 Big Bash League, and is regularly giving viewers a greater insight into his life on the cricket pitch. Flintoff disclosed that he had directed his worst sledge towards Shoaib Akhtar.
Responding to people’s tweets in the innings break during Channel 10’s coverage of the match between the Perth Scorchers and the Brisbane Heat on Saturday night, Freddie decided to let everyone in on a little secret when one person in the Twitterverse asked him about the best sledge he’d heard on the field.
He immediately nominated Australia’s call on England batsman Ian Bell during the 2005 Ashes as the best sledge he’d heard. The Aussies — led by Shane Warne — took to calling Bell “The Sherminator” after the red-haired, nerdy character in the American Pie films, News.com.au reported.
But Flintoff didn’t stop there. He revealed the biggest mistake he made in the sledging department.
“My worst sledge was to Shoaib Akhtar, the world’s fastest bowler. I accused him of looking like Tarzan and bowling like Jane,” said Flintoff.
“He ended up bowling faster and faster and ended up getting me out. Rubbish.”
Akhtar, who has the world's fastest delivery to his name by clocking 161.3 km/h against England during the 2003 World Cup, was capable of scaring even the most accomplished batsmen.
