What went wrong for Yuvraj?

New Delhi: This Singh has always been Indian cricket’s king. On Tuesday, it was time his to hit the crossroads.

If the name is Yuvraj Singh, there will be stories in and around you, all the time. After being left out of the probables’ list for the World Cup, his fans had something to look forward to after his name once again cropped up, following Ravindra Jadeja’s injury.

But on Tuesday, it was back to square again. In the last few Ranji Trophy games, the Punjab all-rounder has hammered three back-to-back centuries. And as he took the field for another group league match against Rajasthan at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur, he was still not sure where the future would take him to. He came, he saw, and perhaps he waited for that good news to come in.

It didn’t. Neither could he deliver the goods at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium. Clearly under pressure, Yuvraj had to walk back to pavilion for three runs. That was the end of a dream, really.

Four years ago, he had battled all odds to give India a taste of World Cup success. And four summers later, he had to bite the dust, despite playing some fascinating innings.

Even BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel admitted that Yuvraj’s name did come up for discussion. “We did analyse his performance. But then, we thought of going ahead with Ravindra Jadeja.”

Sources in the BCCI, who till the other day were pretty convinced about Yuvraj’s comeback into the side, too were stumped.  They believe it was captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s unwillingness that blocked the road for Yuvraj. “A section of the selectors were ready to bring in Yuvraj. But Dhoni is believed to have not shown much interest. And, the selectors naturally decided to go with the captain’s wish,” a source said.

Cricket, they say, is a game of great uncertainties and Yuvraj perhaps faced the rudest shock of his life on a sunny Tuesday afternoon.
