Beginning the year on the back of Test series loss to Australia, things went horrible for Men in Blue as they failed to register a single win the tri-series involving England and hosts Australia.
But the ODI tri-series thrashing worked well for the defending champions India as they entered the World Cup without the burden of expectation on their shoulders. And, Dhoni and Co. came out of with their heads held high, as they went unbeaten all the way to the semi-finals before being beaten by eventual winners, Australia.
The high of the World Cup was soon forgotten when India went to Bangladesh after the Indian Premier League for a three-match ODI series and a solitary Test. While the Test was washed out, with India in complete control, the ODIs were a completely different story as the hosts showed just how impressive they are at home by beating India 2-1 in the series.
Following the unexpected loss against the Tigers, India sent a second-tier side to Zimbabwe under the leadership of Ajinkya Rahane for a limited-overs tour. It went well as they whitewashed the hosts 3-0 in the ODI leg of the series. India also won the first T20 and it seemed as though the visitors would win the T20 series as well, but the hosts mounted a strong comeback to win the second T20 and drew the two-match T20 series 1-1.
After that India went to Sri Lanka and claimed their first away Test series win against the Lankans in 22 years. It was also Virat Kohli’s first full series as India’s Test captain. India won the Test series 2-1.
Their final assignment for the year was against South Africa. India lost the three-match T20 series 2-0 and it looked as though it was going to be another bad series for the hosts. But they managed to make a comeback in the five-match ODI series. The series was 2-2 going into the decider, but South Africa, thanks to AB de Villiers’ blitzkrieg, blew India away. In the Test series, though, the roles were reversed as the Indian spinners, led by Ravichandran Ashwin, dominated and sealed a 3-0 win over the No. 1 ranked Test side.
