There is still no decision over F1 future: Alonso

Johannesburg [South Africa], October 13 (ANI): McLaren driver Fernando Alonso has confirmed that he has still not taken any decision on his Formula One future and is keeping "other categories" as option.

Having secured a switch to Renault from Honda as their engine suppliers, the Spaniard is expected to stay at the newly-powered British team next year.

But Alonso, whose contract expired in September this year, insisted that he was not sure about extending his contract and that he was thinking about all options.

"All options open. There is still no decision. So we'll see. I continue to have all the options open," Sport24 quoted Alonso, as saying.

Alonso has been linked with both Le Mans and the Daytona 24 hour race for 2018.

The 36-year-old further insisted that one of his main goals is to be the best driver in the world, with especially focussing on his desire to clinch the 'triple crown'.

"As I have said several times, one of my goals is to be the best driver in the world, the most complete in the world, and for that I still believe you have to win in other categories too and especially the 'triple crown'. That is one of my goals," Sport24 quoted Alonso, as saying.

"Sometimes, we focus on F1, because it is the best competition in the world of maximum technology. But there are other categories with other cars - with less technology - that require different driving and different skills and it is a major challenge for someone who specialises in something else," Alonso continued.

However, Alonso, who has been named as the 'Rookie of the Year' for the 2017 edition of the Indy 500, downplayed any suggestion of a full-time switch to Indycar.

"The whole season at Indycar I do not have in my mind in the short term. But the 500 miles, after my experience of this year, is attractive," Alonso concluded. (ANI)
