New Delhi: Suresh Raina became the joint second costliest player of the IPL when he was picked by Rajkot team during the IPL players’ draft for the two new entrants – Pune being the other franchise – in the cash-rich Twenty20 league in Mumbai on Tuesday.

Pune, who had the right to pick first player, picked India’s limited-overs captain MS Dhoni before Rajkot decided to go with Raina. The first picks of each franchises are set to receive a salary of Rs 12.5 crore. This made Raina, along with Dhoni, the richest cricketer among the players of Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals, the two teams which were banned for two years by the Supreme Court.

In Ravindra Jadeja, James Faulkner and Dwayne Bravo, Rajkot have picked three handy all-rounders, and will be relying on Brendon McCullum, alongside Raina, to form the core of the batting order.

Raina is among the most valuable players in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and has the record of playing most number of matches in the tournament.

Raina may also be asked to lead the Rajkot side. The only competition for him will be New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum.

To express his happiness after being picked for such money, Raina tweeted that he is excited to play for the ‘beautiful vibrant city - Rajkot in @IPL’.
