'Millionaire' Virat Kohli is afraid of bankruptcy

New Delhi: Virat Kohli is in the form of his life. The current poster boy of Indian cricket, racked up 973 runs in the recently concluded Indian Premier League (IPL) – a feat which is unprecedented in the nine-year history of the tournament and likely to remain untouched for many years. Kohli’s consistency is a dream for any cricketer. He slammed a record number of centuries (four) in a single edition of the IPL, scored at an amazing average of 77 in the Asia Cup T20 earlier this year, and bagged the Player of the Tournament award in the ICC World T20 that followed soon after. He is already in the league of greats. And he is just 27 years old. A bright future lies ahead of him. Virat was recently voted as the eighth ‘Most Famous Athlete in the World’ by ESPN. But he doesn’t feel completely secured. SHOCKED?! In an interview to GQ Magazine recently, Virat himself revealed his biggest fear. “I’ve begun to think about my future. About how to secure it. Money doesn’t motivate me, but it’s important,” Kohli told the Indian version of the men's magazine. “I’ve gotten accustomed to a certain financial environment. It’s important to sustain that. I’ve seen so many athletes go bankrupt at the end of their career. It’s scary,” he added. Kohli reportedly earns Rs 8 lakh per month from just playing cricket matches. Moreover, being one of the most marketable athletes on the planet, he earns another Rs 13 crore per annum from brand endorsements, including for displaying stickers on his bat and wearing shoes and apparel of various brands.
