Even after being excluded from the World Cup squad, and receiving a snub from the central contracts, Yuvraj has proved his mettle in the Ranji Trophy, scoring consecutive centuries. And, that's making a few franchise eye the southpaw as they start planning for the auction, scheduled to be held next month.
After roping him as the highest-paid player last year (Rs 14 crore), Yuvraj was released by Royal Challengers Bangalore. But knowing his capability, the Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Daredevils and even RCB are looking to get him on board, at a 'comparatively' lower price.
"As of now, the plan is to go for Yuvraj. We need a proper all-rounder to strengthen our side, and Yuvraj is definitely our first choice," a top official of Rajasthan Royals told ABP News.
But Royals' plans would largely depend on whether the Supreme Court allows them to play the IPL next season. With the apex court yet to announce its verdict on the IPL spot-fixing, there remains a little doubt over Royals' participation in the IPL, along with Chennai Super Kings.
But hoping that things would fall in place, the Royals think-tank is certainly keeping an eye on Yuvraj. "We will soon discuss with mentor (Rahul) Dravid and coach Paddy Upton. We will go into the auctions with a proper strategy," the Royals official pointed out.
And not just Royals, the franchises like Delhi Daredevils and Royal Challengers Bangalore too are keen on getting the southpaw on board. Even though the Bangalore outfit had released their highest paid recruit, team sources indicate they would want to get him back, may be at a 'slightly affordable' price.
"We are keeping an eye on other players too, but if Yuvraj is up for grabs, we too wouldn't mind bidding," a source in the RCB informed.
Going into the auction with the biggest purse, Daredevils will once again go for their set formula of building a new team, and for that they might just pick Yuvraj at a comparatively low price. That would not only give them a genuine all-rounder, but would also provide them with an option of a skipper. "We are looking at all the possible options," was all Daredevils officials had to say, dropping a hint that they would try to bring in Yuvraj.
From being the hero of the World Cup winning side, Yuvraj has slowly lost his foothold in the team. And, it all happened in a span of four years.
But when the IPL auction starts, Yuvraj would be hoping to replicate the slogan of his once popular commercial, Jab tak balla chalta hai, that hai beta!
