Dhanbad: Apparently unhappy about his arranged marriage, a
27-year-old RPF commando turned his AK-47 rifle inwards and fired on
himself today, dying a bloody death instantaneously. A member of the quick
reaction team (QRT) of the Railway Protection Force, Gajendra Kumar Meena
died at 1.15pm after he managed to pump several bullets into his chest at
the residence of RPF commandant Shashi Kumar at Rangatand in Dhanbad.

Meena,
a resident of Bharatpur in Rajasthan, was supposed to board Bikaner
Express today for his hometown for his engagement scheduled by his parents
for February 24. He was to get married on April 24. But, Kumar said Meena
had told him he was against marrying the girl his parents had chosen for
him. Instead, he confided in him about a relationship he was pursuing with
a nurse working in a Bharatpur hospital and insisted that he wanted to
marry her.

“I had advised him not to worry but talk to his
parents and elder brother for an amicable solution. I thought he had
agreed to do that,” Kumar told The Telegraph, adding it was extremely
sad that such a brave and promising cop took his own life in this fashion.

Meena
received commando training in 2010 in Lucknow for about a year after which
he was inducted in the RPF’s quick reaction team and posted in Dhanbad.
He lived in the commandant’s house in Dhanbad along with five other
commandos.

Today, 45 minutes before he ended his life, Meena and
Kumar met Dhanbad DRM Sudhir Kumar for a routine discussion. He came back
home soon after the meeting and immediately told his associates to fetch
him lunch. When they left, he used his AK-47 rifle to kill himself. When
his associates returned, they saw him lying in a pool of blood.

Meena’s
body has been sent for post-mortem. Commandant Shashi Kumar said that on
hindsight, Meena did seem a bit distracted in the last couple of days.
“I have spoken with his elder brother in Bharatpur. They are coming to
Dhanbad to take away his body,” he said.
