Swachh Survekshan 2017: PM Narendra Modi's Varanasi jumps to 32 from 418

New Delhi: In Swachh Bharat survey, India’s most populous state Uttar Pradesh is also the dirtiest and fifty of the 62 of its cities that were surveyed ranked below 300. Interestingly, the holy city of Varanasi, which is also Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s parliamentary constituency, is the only exception and ranked 32. It is a dramatic improvement from 2014 when it was close to the bottom at 418 among 476 cities. Varanasi also known as Benares, is a city on the banks of the Ganges and is a major religious hub in India. It is the holiest of the seven sacred cities (Sapta Puri) in Hinduism and Jainism. City played an important role in the development of Buddhism. Gonda in Uttar Pradesh is the dirtiest and stands at 434. Bhusawal (Maharashtra) is a rank above Gonda (433) and Bihar’s Bagaha is at number 432. UP's Hardoi is at 431 and Bihar’s Katihar at 430.
