Punjab Assembly Election Result 2017 Live: Congress wins majority, Badal to resign tomorrow

NEW DELHI: The opposition Congress has crossed the magic figure of 59 seats, requried to form government, in the 117-member Punjab Assembly. Live Updates on Punjab Assembly Election Results:
  • As the Congress headed towards forming the next government in Punjab, Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal said he will resign tomorrow and support Amarinder Singh on the issues related to the rights of the state.
  • Badal said he will ask his son and Shiromani Akali Dal President Sukhbir Badal to form a committee so that the reasons behind the defeat can be discussed in detail.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi called up Congress leader Amarinder Singh to congratulate him on the electoral victory in Punjab.
  • "If (SAD President) Sukhbir Singh Badal and the Akalis have lost in Punjab, it is because they made politics a business. They considered Punjab's treasury as their own property. They were full of arrogance, but they are finished today," said Sidhu, who left the BJP to join the Congress last year.

  • "I thank you people of Punjab, my leadership Rahulji and Soniaji," Amarinder Singh told reporters in his first remarks to the media after the Congress appeared set to return to power in Punjab.

  • Counting of vote begins
  • Traditional rivals, the BJP and the Congress, are locked in a keen electoral battle in the two states where Arvind Kejriwal's AAP has made its maiden foray in the assembly elections, seeking to play a killjoy for the two major contenders for power.
  • It is the first outing for Aam Aadmi Party in assembly elections outside Delhi where it rules with an overwhelming majority in the state assembly and it is being keenly watched if it succeeds in its claim of upsetting the applecart of the two major national parties.
  • In Punjab, the Shiromani Akali Dal-BJP alliance is battling anti-incumbency while Amarinder Singh is leading Congress' bid to return to power after ten years in the 117-member state assembly.
  • Early trends will start pouring in from 8 a.m. for all the five states - Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Manipur and Goa - where thousands of central forces have been deployed at vote counting centres.
  • The Congress is also eying power in Punjab and Goa and hopes to retain Uttarakhand and Manipur.
  • The fledgling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is also hoping to form governments in Goa and Punjab -- which would mark its first electoral success outside Delhi.
