One who maintains silence on triple talaq is equally guilty of crime: Yogi Adityanath

New Delhi: Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath on Monday took up the contentious issue of triple talaq at an event in Lucknow. He questioned the silence of many people on triple talaq saying “ones who are maintaining silence on it are equally guilty of the crime.” (WATCH BELOW) Yogi was speaking during an event marking the 91st birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Chandrashekhar. He said that the practice of triple talaq was similar to ‘cheer haran’ of Draupadi in Mahabharata. Yogi questioned why India doesn’t have one law on marriage/divorce when the "country is one". "What is the harm to implement Uniform Civic code in the country.” Last week, Adityanath had asked the women welfare department to oversee an exercise of collecting opinion of Muslim women on the triple talaq practice so that these could be presented before Supreme Court. The government plans to complete the exercise soon as the case is to be heard by a Constitution Bench in May. On Sunday PM Modi also raised the 'triple talaq' issue, saying justice should be done to Muslim women and asked the BJP to reach out to the backward sections in the community over his government’s bill to accord constitutional status to the OBC Commission.
