NSD Bengaluru students begin protests after being evicted over unpaid rent

Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], August 17 (ANI): The students of the National School of Drama (NSD) Bengaluru took to protest outside Guru Nanak Bhavan on Thursday as they were evicted from premises due to non-payment of rent dues by institution.

The high drama on the premises started after the students and the faculty were evicted and all equipment and materials belonging to the institution were thrown out following non-payment of rent yesterday.

The eviction was done after a notice was issued by the Department of Youth Empowerment and Sports (DYES), citing NSD's long pending dues.

The Sports and Youth Welfare Ministry didn't even inform the school about increasing the rent of the auditorium.

Reportedly, the rent agreement has already been extended three times in the past. The monthly rent was increased from Rs. 24,000 to an Rs. 55,000.

As per the norms, the NSD Bengaluru wing needed time to negotiate with the NSD Delhi.

Meanwhile, the NSD was planning to also use the building to host Theatre Olympics starting February next year. (NAI)
