Modi congratulates Donald Trump on assuming office but will new POTUS increase anxiety for Indians?

New Delhi: Thousands of kilometers away, Donald J Trump has taken oath of Presidentship of United States of America (USA) but the tremors are felt in India too. Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated POTUS and tweeted-"Looking forward to working with President @realDonaldTrump to further deepen India-US ties & realise the full potential of our cooperation."

"Congratulations @realDonaldTrump on assuming office as US President. Best wishes in leading USA to greater achievements in the coming years," he added. Likewise, President of India, Pranab Mukherjee also tweeted-"We look forward to an early opportunity of welcoming you and Mrs. Melania Trump to India @realDonaldTrump."

However, in India too some like Shobhaa De not appeared happy with the new POTUS and tweeted-"How sad for the poor little rich boy, The Donald, that at his own inauguration , it is Barack Obama who is the real star!"

Will Donald Trump increase anxiety of Indians? In his very first speech, Donald Trump said something which may increase the tension of some Indian companies. He talked about stopping outsourcing. He said, "Buy American, hire American" and added, "We will bring back our jobs". Trump may tighten H1B rules. Indian IT companies may get affected. He may increase the tax. Interestingly, through H1B visa Indian works in America. It is for three years which can be then extended to six years. It is worth mentioning here that Indian does an export of 40 billion dollars to the the USA. We also do an import of 22 billion dollars from the USA. INDIANS FRET ABOUT IMMIGRATION PROSPECTS Among dozens of young, urban Indians who watched Trump’s inauguration and speech at a club in a New Delhi, the 27-year-old Jigar Gorasia said getting work visas for professionals and green cards will become a problem. “It is going to be a little bit challenging for those,” said Gorasia, who studied and worked in Chicago before moving back to India last year. Divya Narayanan, a 21-year-old student of journalism, said that Trump as president worried her. “Someone at the level of the U.S. president coming out and saying things which are bigoted, which are sexist, it sets a precedent for other people in the country, right?” Indian newspapers highlighted Trump’s protectionist policies in his speech. “America First President,” read the banner headline of The Indian Express newspaper. “Protectionist Trumpet: Buy American, Hire American,” was the headline of The Times of India newspaper.
