Medical college bribery scam: CBI to reply till Jan 22

New Delhi [India] Jan 17 (ANI): A Delhi court on Wednesday issued a notice to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) seeking its reply till January 22 in connection with the alleged Medical Council of India (MCI) bribery case.

Earlier on December 1, the apex court dismissed a petition by the Campaign for Judicial Accountability and Judicial Reforms (CJAR) in the same case.

The top court did not find any merit in the petition filed by CJAR.

A similar petition filed by Senior Supreme Court lawyer Kamini Jaiswal was also dismissed by the apex court in the same case.

The case pertains to the medical college bribery scam against I M Quddusi, retired Orissa High Court judge, who was arrested along with middleman Vishwanath Agarwala and B.P. Yadav of the Prasad Education Trust, by the CBI under the Prevention of Corruption Act.

Quddusi allegedly used his influence to help the Uttar Pradesh-based Prasad Education Trust in "settling" a matter involving their plea to set up medical colleges.

The Trust owned one of the 46 medical colleges barred by the Central government from admitting students.

The accused were subsequently granted bail, but the same was not challenged by the CBI.

Following granting of the bail, the CJAR filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the Supreme Court seeking the constitution of a SIT to investigate the allegations, with a retired judge monitoring the same. (ANI)
