Journalists condemn murder of K. J. Singh, call for legal protection

New Delhi [India], Sept 23 (ANI): With the recent murder of senior journalist K. J. Singh, senior journalists Rahul Jalali and Gautam Lahiri called for justice for the series of recent killing of journalists, with Jalali even demanding a legal protection to journalists

Expressing concern over the increasing cases of murder of journalists across the country, Jalali called for a legal framework to protect journalists.

"Parliament should pass a law to give protection to journalists' lives and liberty, and offer major compensation to them by the respective state government if they are killed in the line of duty," Jalali told ANI.

He also urged journalists to get together to protest against the killings.

"Any agitation about killings of journalists should be focused towards building a legal framework to protect us," Jalali added.

Meanwhile, senior journalist and President of Press Club of India Gautam Lahiri informed that a silent protest march will be held to draw everyone's attention towards the atrocities towards journalists.

"On behalf of Press Club, we have joined hands with other journalist organisations and planned a silent protest march on October 2 to give a message to the government, authority, and civil society at large, that now you should think and introspect about what is happening," Lahiri told ANI.

Asserting that murdered journalist K.J. Singh should get justice, Lahiri also said that government should conduct proper inquiry and the country should know why has he been killed.

Senior journalist K. J. Singh and his 92-year-old mother, Gurcharan Kaur, were found dead on Saturday in their Mohali residence.

The police suspect it to be a case of murder. (ANI)
