J&K: Suicide attack foiled on CRPF camp, DGMO warns Pak against abetting infiltrators

NEW DELHI: Hours after four heavily-armed militants were killed as they tried to storm a CRPF camp, the director generals of military operations of India and Pakistan on Monday discussed the situation along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir. Talking over the hotline between the two countries, the DGMO of the Indian Army conveyed to his Pakistani counterpart India's commitment towards ensuring peace and tranquility on the LoC. At the same time, Lieutenant General A K Bhatt asserted that India will take appropriate retaliatory action if the Pakistan Army continues to "abet" infiltrators and resort to "trans-LoC" firings.  The CRPF on Monday foiled an early morning suicide attack on one of its camp in Bandipora district of Jammu and Kashmir. Four terrorists were killed. The terrorists lobbed grenades at the CRPF's 45 Battalion camp in north Kashmir's Sumbal region around 3.45 a.m. followed by heavy firing. "The fidayeen militants kept firing as they tried to enter the camp. The attack was effectively repulsed by the CRPF sentry and Sumbal Police," CRPF Deputy Inspector General M. Dinakaran told IANS. Luckily, no loss was reported from the CRPF side, he added. Several weapons have been recovered along with the bodies of four militants, whose identity is yet to be established, Dinakaran said. Four AK-47 rifles, over a dozen grenades and a huge cache of ammunition have also been seized, the official added. The "foreign terrorists" failed to breach the camp's security as they were neutralised near the camp's fence. They were neutralised 10-15 yards away from the camp's fencing. The Sumbal camp of the CRPF is the headquarters of the 45th battalion which was headed by Chetan Kumar Cheeta, who survived despite taking nine bullets while fighting militants in Bandipora in 2016. Confirming the incident, J&K DGP Shesh Paul Vaid tweeted, "45 Bn @crpfindia/@JmuKmrPolice killed 4 terrorists at Sumba #Bandipore who were attempting suicidal attack on CRPF camp. #JaiHind" The Army had on May 28 foiled an infiltration bid in Krishnagati sector of Poonch even as it shot dead an intruder in an ambush. On May 17, Pakistan Army had fired on forward posts along the LoC in Balakote sector in Rajouri district. The Pakistan Army had shelled forward areas and civilian belts along the LoC in Rajouri district on May 15 and 16. The firing and shelling by the Pakistan Army in May this year has affected over 12,000 people. The Pakistani Army had on May 13 pounded civilian areas and forward posts along the LoC in Nowshera area with mortars, killing two civilians and injuring three The Home Ministry in an RTI reply had said that at least one incident of ceasefire violation by Pakistan took place daily along the LoC in Jammu and Kashmir in 2015 and 2016 in which 23 security personnel lost their lives. As many as 1,142 terror incidents were reported in the state between 2012 and 2016 in which 236 security personnel and 90 civilians were killed, it said in reply to an RTI query filed by a PTI Bhasha correspondent.
