India summons Abdul Basit, presents proof of Pak's role in Uri terror attack

New Delhi: India’s Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar on Tuesday called on Pakistan High Commissioner Abdul Basit and presented proof of cross border origins of the terror attack that killed 18 soldiers in Jammu and Kashmir's Uri. Jaishankar informed him that the two guides who helped infiltration were apprehended by local villagers and were in custody. The details of the two guides are Faizal Hussain Awan (20 yrs), son of Gul Akbar; resident of Potha Jahangir, Muzzaffarabad. Yasin Khurshid (19 yrs), son of Mohammed Khurshid, resident of Khiliana Kalan, Muzzaffarabad. The submission of proofs comes a day after External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj waraj, in a sharp rebuke to Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's "tirade" on Kashmir, said in UNGA that those accusing others of rights violations must introspect. She censured Pakistan for the first time at the UNGA for perpetrating the "worst form of state oppression" in Balochistan. Last Wednesday, Jaishankar summoned Pakistan High Commissioner Abdul Basit and told him that latest terrorist attack in Uri only underlines that the infrastructure of terrorism in Pakistan remains active. Jaishankar also told Basit then about the content of GPS recovered from the bodies of terrorists with coordinates that indicate the point and time of infiltration across the LoC and the subsequent route to the terror attack site and grenades with Pakistani markings as evidence of Pakistan's role in Uri attack in which 18 jawans were killed. Asserting that the latest terrorist attack in Uri only underlines that the infrastructure of terrorism in Pakistan remains active, Jaishankar demanded that Pakistan lives up to its public commitment to refrain from supporting and terrorism against India. He also reminded Basit that the Pakistan government had made a solemn commitment in January 2004 to not allow its soil or territory under its control to be used for terrorism against India. "The persistent and growing violation of this undertaking is a matter of very serious concern," he told Basit. (With information from PTI)
