Srinagar: A gunfight between the security forces and separatist guerrillas is on in Jammu and Kashmir's Kupwara district Thursday, police said.

Police said the security forces surrounded Salkoot village Thursday morning following information about the presence of a group of guerrillas there.

"When the security forces closed on the hiding militants they started firing that triggered an encounter in the area which is still on," a senior police officer told IANS here.

The officer said two to three guerrillas are believed to be holed up in the area.
