Puducherry:  Former Union Minister and Congress lawmaker V Narayanasamy held a pair of slippers for party VP Rahul Gandhi who was touring flood-hit Puducherry on Tuesday.

Narayanasamy was seen in a video holding the slippers while Rahul removed his shoes to walk in a flooded area, and then placing them for him to slip into.

"As a courtesy I offered my chappals as Mr Rahul Gandhi removed his shoes to walk barefoot in the water," reportedly said the 68-year-old Congress veteran.

"We don't have such (sycophancy) a culture in the Congress. Rahul carried his shoes throughout and he didn't even let his security personnel carry them for him," the leader added.

Rahul toured rain-affected parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry and urged the state and central governments to be "more responsive" to people's plight.

"I would like to tell the Government of Tamil Nadu and Government of India that they need to do a lot more for the people of Tamil Nadu, they need to be much more responsive."

"The state government and the national government need to respond to this (the tragedy) and take action as fast as possible," he said.
