DMK expresses discontent over appointment of Banwari Lal Purohit as Tamil Nadu governor

Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India], Sept. 30 (ANI): Hours after President Ram Nath Kovind appointed Banwari Lal Purohit as Tamil Nadu governor; the opposition Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) on Saturday expressed its dissatisfaction over the appointment, stating that governor would act according to the wishes of Bharatiya Janata Party.

Speaking to media here, DMK Rajya Sabha MP and spokesperson T.K.S. Elangovan said, "Governor is going to act according to the wishes of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). I don't think there will be any change in approach."

Earlier in the day, President Ram Nath Kovind appointed Banwari Lal Purohit as Tamil Nadu governor. This is the first time that the state has got a full time governor after K Rosaiah retired in August 2016.

Maharashtra governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao had additional charge of Tamil Nadu since Rosaiah's retirement.

Purohit was earlier appointed as the Governor of Assam by the President on August 17, 2016. He has been a thrice elected member of parliament from Nagpur, twice on the Indian National Congress's ticket and once as a BJP member. (ANI)
