Disturbing to know that 'Dalit leader' Mayawati wasn't allowed to speak in RS: Congress

New Delhi [India], July 18 (ANI): The Congress Party on Tuesday expressed concern after the Bahujan Samajwadi Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati decided to resign from Rajya Sabha, stating that it is very disturbing to know that a "Dalit leader" was not allowed to speak in the Parliament.

Speaking to ANI, Congress leader KTS Tulsi said, "The House should conduct a discussion on this issue as it is a serious one. Also, it is very disturbing that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has ensured about no interruption by any ruling party in this matter. When a Dalit leader is not allowed to speak in the Assembly, it is the most disturbing thing".

Resonating similar views, another Congress leader Renuka Chaudhary asserted that government can allow lynching but not a Dalit leader to speak in the Parliament.

"It is the most disgusting thing that happened today when a Dalit leader was not been allowed to speak in the Assembly. Things like lynching and communal unrest is acceptable in the country but when a leader, a woman or a person from Dalit community wants to express then she is not allowed. And the government expects us to keep quite on all these matters," Chaudhary said.

Mayawati earlier in the day threatened to resign from the Rajya Sabha after saying that she was not allowed to speak on Dalits and other weaker sections being targeted in Uttar Pradesh.

"When I tried speaking about the weaker sections today in the Rajya Sabha, I was not allowed to speak. Why? It's a shame. If I am not allowed to speak on Dalits being targeted then I will resign from the Rajya Sabha," Mayawati said.

She added that the reason she has decided to quit is because her points are not being heard and she is not allowed to speak on important matters.

After the former Uttar Pradesh chief minister walked out, the Opposition raised slogans and forced an adjournment of proceedings. (ANI)
