Day 17: From Rahul to Didi; Akhilesh to Yechury- 10 heavyweights slam PM on demonetisation

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been facing a lot of flak ever since he announced the scrapping of 500 and 1000 rupee notes to fight the menace of black money.  Several leaders from the opposition have taken a jibe at the PM for the inconvenience that is being caused to the common man because of the faulty execution of the demonetisation move. The move has provoked a salvo of criticisms. Here are ten of them:
  1. Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi on Friday demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi participate in the debate over demonetisation in the parliament. "Sometimes he laughs and sometimes he cries outside the parliament. The Prime Minister should come to the House and participate in the debate," Gandhi told the media here.
  2. Accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi for "spreading lies" on the demonetisation issue, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today claimed that Rs 1.28 lakh crore have been lost forever due to the scrapping of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes. "Shocking that Rs 1.28 lakh crore have been lost forever due to note-ban only in 'transactions' in the country, says CMIE, top research body. World-famous Moody's says 'note ban will badly disrupt economic activity'," Banerjee said in a statement.
  3. Poor are most affected by government's decision, now people will answer government in the time to come (elections): UP CM Akhilesh Yadav
  4. Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today hit out at supporters of Centre's demonetisation process saying how much proof they need to agree that it was rolled out with "no application of mind"."How much more proof is required before devotees of this government agree that this demonetisation has been rolled out with no application of mind," Omar wrote on twitter.
  5. The government opted for selective leakage and helped their own people to hide their black money: Mallikarjun Kharge, Congress
  6. Modi stated that demonetisation was being denounced because its critics had been tripped by the sudden announcement. On which, Sharad Yadav (JD-U) said Modi has levelled a serious allegation and should apologise.
  7. Ramgopal Yadav (SP) said there could not be anything more shameful than the Prime Minister alleging that the entire opposition was a supporter of blackmoney.
  8. Derek O'Brien (TMC) said there was a good debate yesterday where everyone had opposed blackmoney. And the now Prime Minister is saying "he is a saint and we are all devils", he said, also demanding an apology from Modi.
  9. Leader of Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad said when it was made very clear by former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and others during debate on demonetisation yesterday that the opposition is against blackmoney, how can Modi make such allegations."How can Prime Minister level such an allegation... we are against blackmoney. Prime Minister must apologise," he said.
  10. CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury today targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi over demonetisation, dubbing him as "Tughlaq" who had "gone missing" after issuing a farman (order). "Barely 20-25% of cash demand being met in Metros. Rural areas even worse. While Tughlaq goes missing after his firman," Yechury tweeted.
