Cow vigilantism matter: Supreme Court asks for compliance report from states

New Delhi [India], September 22 (ANI): The Supreme Court on Friday asked for a compliance report from all the states in connection with the cow vigilantism matter.

The top court three-judge bench, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misra and comprising of Justices A.M. Khanwilkar and D.Y. Chandrachud said that all states are under an obligation to compensate the victims of cow vigilante violence cases.

Gujarat, Rajasthan, Jharkhand, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh have filed their compliance reports today. The apex court has asked others to file soon.

The next hearing will take place on October 31.

The apex court was hearing the plea filed by Sehzad Poonawalla.

The plea alleged that these groups were committing atrocities against the Dalits and other minorities in the name of protection of cows and they needed to be "regulated and banned in the interest of social harmony, public morality and law and order in the country". (ANI)
