Centre not in agreement with SHRC's compensation order to human shield victim

New Delhi [India], July 10 (ANI): Union Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu on Monday criticised Jammu and Kashmir's State Human Rights Commission's (SHRC) order that asked the state government to provide a compensation of Rs. 10 Lakh to Farooq Ahmad Dar, who was used as a human shield by Major Nitin Leetul Gogoi earlier this year.

Naidu said that he has such no sympathies with such people who "indulge in stone pelting."

"I don't agree with them. Pelting stones is inhuman; hurting the personnel of the Army is also inhuman. I don't know how this order has been given and by whom, but we are not in agreement with their attitude," Naidu said.

Naidu further said that the entire country was happy and appreciative of what Major Gogoi has done.

"He wanted to save the lives of the Election Commission officials and also, the ordinary police personnel on the field, that is why, using common sense, the action was taken," he added.

Earlier today, SHRC Chairman Justice Bilal Nazki passed the direction.

"The state government should provide Rs. 10 lakh compensation to the victim, Farooq Ahmad Dar," the SHRC observed.

The SHRC, however, refused to direct the Army in the case saying that "it doesn't have jurisdiction over the Army." (ANI)
