CBI to challenge court's verdict on 2G scam

New Delhi [India], Dec 21 (ANI): The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday said it would challenge the verdict in the 2G spectrum allocation case as the court may have had not appreciated the evidence in its proper perspective.

Speaking to ANI, CBI Spokesperson, Abhishek Dayal said "The judgment (of the special CBI court) relating to the 2G scam dated December 21, 2017 has been prima facie examined and it appears that the evidence adduced to substantiate the charges by the prosecution has not been appreciated in its proper perspective by the learned court."

"The CBI is taking necessary legal remedies in the matter," he added.

The verdict was announced today, nearly seven years after the first arrest was made by the agency in 2011.

The alleged scam relates to the granting of 2G spectrum licence allocations in 2007-08, which caused, according to a report by the Comptroller and Auditor General of India, a loss of Rs 1.76 lakh crore to the public exchequer.

It was among the major corruption scandals that came to light during the second term of the UPA government headed by Dr Manmohan Singh. (ANI)
