BJP names N. Biren Singh as CM candidate for Manipur

New Delhi: Bhartiya Janata Party is all set to form the government in Manipur. Party on Monday, announced its chief ministerial candidate of Manipur to replace current CM Okram Ibobi Singh who will resign on Tuesday. Earlier, Governor Najma Heptulla has asked O Ibobi Singh to resign immediately because As per rules, until and unless the present chief minister resigns, the process of formation of the next government cannot be started. Ibobi Singh, along with deputy chief minister Gaikhamgam and state Congress president T N Haokip, had met the Governor last night. The Governor had asked Singh to resign immediately so that she can start the process of government formation according to the sources. Biren Singh will meet Governor Najma Heptulla to stake his claim to form the ministry. Nongthombam Biren Singh won from Heingang defeating Trinamool Congress' Pangeijam Saratchandra Singh. A national football player-turned journalist-turned-politician, 56-year-old Nongthmobam Biren Singh began his political career in 2002 when he was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Manipur, as the Democratic Revolutionary Peoples Party candidate in the constituency Heingang. Biren joined BJP last year and he is now to be sworn in as Chief Minister of Manipur.
