Bihar floods update: Army Column, ETF continue to deployed in affected areas

Patna (Bihar) [India], August 23 (ANI): One Army Column and One Engineer Task Force (ETF) have been deployed in seven districts of Bihar, which have been successful in rescuing people from the flood-hit areas.

At least 14 people were rescued from Katihar, Madhubani, East Champaran and 18 from West Champaran, Sitamarhi, Begusarai.

Besides the rescue operation, 38,630 food packets were distributed among the flood-affected people and around 6, 953 were provided with medical aid.

Arrangements have also been made for crowd control and repair of embankment.

Additional Secretary Disaster Management Department of the Government of Bihar, Anirudh Kumar, yesterday said that 341 people have lost their lives in the state due to floods.

According to an officials, till date, 7,61,774 people have been evacuated to safe places by the rescue teams of the Army, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), while the government has set up 1,085 relief camps in which 2,29,097 people are living.

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar took stock of flood affected areas in the state last week and assured that the relief and food camps were being conducted in the area for those in need.

Three columns of Army were deployed in flood-hit Katihar district for the relief and rescue operation.

The central help came after Nitish sought help of the Army and Air Force as the flood situation worsened in the state.

Overflowing rivers from Nepal have played a major spoilsport in four northeastern districts - Kishanganj, Araria, Purnia and Katihar.

Supaul, Saharsa, Bagha, Gopalganj, Madhubani, Sitamarhi, Khagaria, Darbhanga and Madhepura districts are the other districts which have been affected by floods. (ANI)
