Sisodia lauds UP govt, decides to scrap school holidays marking anniversaries

NEW DELHI: Taking a cue from Uttar Pradesh, the Delhi government has decided to cancel public holidays marking the birth or death anniversary of eminent personalities. Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia in a series of tweets said, "The Delhi government will also cancel holidays on birth/death anniversary of eminent personalities. I have issued instruction to the chief secretary in this regard. "The Uttar Pradesh government has taken a good initiative in this matter. We should always be ready to learn from other states," he said. "The support at national level for Delhi government's Mohalla clinic initiative and doing away with red beacons has also encouraged us," he tweeted. The Uttar Pradesh government recently cancelled 15 public holidays in marking the birth or death anniversary of eminent personalities. Instead of giving students a holiday on birth anniversaries of eminent personalities, Uttar Pradesh schools will now have discussion on the life, work and ideology their anniversaries. "There should be no holidays in schools on birth anniversaries of great personalities. Instead special two hour programme should be held to teach students about them”, UP CM Adityanath had said. "Many students don’t understand and value the importance of birth anniversaries of national leaders. Neither are they aware of such days since the day is observed as a holiday. Therefore, UP government would ensure that schools remain open on such days and organize special programmes to honour the leader born on that day," Adityanath had said on the occasion of Babasaheb Ambedkar’s birth anniversary.
