ABP News Twitter survey: Majority feels CM Manohar Lal Khattar should resign post-Haryana violence

The Centre asked the Haryana government to provide adequate security to the CBI special court judge who convicted Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh in a rape case, officials said.

New Delhi: Violence that erupted after a special CBI court in Panchkula pronounced Dera Chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim guilty on Friday, raised many questions about the inability of Manohar Lal Khattar government in the state. Interestingly, this is the third time the state government failed. the other two being the Rampal case and Jat agitation. What is even more shocking is that this time, despite, strict orders by the High Court, the state government did not wake up. A survey run by ABP News channel's twitter handle says that majority of the people in the state think that chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar resign from his post after Friday's Haryana violence. After a special Central Bureau of Investigation court in Panchkula, Haryana, delivered its verdict, on Friday, in a 2002 sexual assault case of two sadhvis (female followers) of Dera Sacha Sauda (DSS). The court found the DSS chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh guilty of rape. Dera chief was to be sentenced on 28 August 2017 and he faces a minimum of seven years’ imprisonment. Following the report of the court, riots erupted in Haryana in general and in Panchkula in particular; later spread to other parts of northern Indian states of Punjab and the capital New Delhi. At least 30 people were killed and 250 others were injured. Dera chief violence: Prohibitory orders in UP, Delhi, Raj districts Prohibitory orders were imposed in all but two districts of Delhi, nine districts of Uttar Pradesh and a district of Rajasthan following widespread violence in Haryana and other places after the conviction of Dera Sacha Sauda chief in a rape case. Official sources said no casualty has been reported from Delhi, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh, adding that no curfew has been imposed in these regions. The home ministry told the Haryana government that Judge Jagdeep Singh should be provided highest level of security in view of the threat perception after he delivered the verdict against the Dera head, an official said. The home ministry will analyse intelligence inputs before deciding whether the Judge's security needs to be handled by a central force, such as the CRPF or CISF, the official said. Widespread violence in Haryana and a few neighbouring states following the conviction of the Dera chief left nearly 30 dead and scores injured. Haryana: Gurmeet Ram Rahim has been receiving favours from Khattar govt Dera Sacha Sauda head Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, who was convicted in a rape case on Friday, has been receiving favours from the Manohar Lal Khattar government of Haryana earlier. Just three months back, Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar had announced tax exemption for six months on movie Jattu Engineer featuring Ram Rahim Singh. Khattar had announced the tax exemption at an event in Karnal in May. Earlier, the chief minister had started a cleanliness drive along with the Dera chief. (With inputs from PTI)
