Upcoming Hyundai Cars In India - At A Glance

After launching only the next-gen models of the Elantra and the Tucson last year, the Korean automaker is all set to have a busy 2017!

Upcoming Hyundai Cars In India - At A Glance

Last year, Hyundai Motors didn’t launch any new product in the sub-10 lakh category and restricted itself to the launch of the all-new Tucson SUV and the Elantra sedan. Both the models were applauded for their looks, performance and features. However, the South Korean carmaker will be flexing its mass segment muscle this year with facelifts of a hatch, sedan and a couple of its premium hybrid saloons. Here’s the list of cars that will come from Hyundai’s stable soon.

1. Hyundai Grand i10 Facelift

Update: Launched in February 2017

Hyundai launched the Grand i10 facelift in India in Feb 2017. The car now gets a 1.2-litre diesel engine instead of the 1.1-litre unit before. Hyundai has redesigned the front and rear bumpers as well and LED DRLs are now a part of the Grand i10's equipment list. Head to our launch story to know more about the Grand i10 facelift. 2. Hyundai Xcent Facelift

The only under-4m Hyundai sedan, the Xcent is gearing up for a facelift this April. However, the changes are likely to be cosmetic and more in line with what the Grand i10 facelift, launched in January, offered. That said, some of the features available in the new Grand i10 and likely to make way to the Xcent too, include rear parking camera with display, 7.0 touchscreen audio system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Mirror Link, voice recognition and smartphone navigation, LED DRLs in the Sportz(O) and Asta variants and automatic climate control in the Asta trim. With respect to mechanicals, it will be equipped with the same petrol and diesel mills as that of the Grand i10 facelift.

3. Hyundai Verna

Expected launch – August 2017

Another big launch of the year by the Korean automaker would be the next-gen Verna sedan. It will feature ISG stop-start and is likely to get a hybrid treatment, just like its rival, the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz SHVS. Unveiled at the Beijing International Automobile Exhibition last year in April, the Verna will feature Hyundai’s latest design philosophy as seen in the new Elantra. To enhance the appeal of its interiors, it is likely to carry a handful of features from its elder sibling. The engine options are expected to remain the same, but Hyundai might tune it for better power figures. It presently gets a 1.4-litre and a 1.6-litre diesel motor along with a 1.4-litre and a 1.6-litre petrol engine options.

4. Hyundai Sonata

Expected launch – Late 2017/early 2018

The carmaker had earlier hinted at launching more hybrid vehicles in the country. Going by this, the new Sonata is likely to be on the cards. When launched, it will rival established players like the Toyota Camry and the Honda Accord and, not to forget, the upcoming Volkswagen Passat GTE. The premium car will boast a 2.0-litre petrol motor with plug-in hybrid set-up. Individually, this motor churns out 156PS of top power and 190Nm of torque and, when paired with an electric motor, the combined output reaches 195PS.

5. Hyundai Ioniq

Expected launch – February 2018

The Ioniq sedan has been attracting a lot of eyeballs these days, thanks to its awe-inspiring looks, especially the Lexus-esque grille. Showcased at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show, it will be offered with three engine options globally – hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric. The Indian version will most likely feature the hybrid setup. The plug-in version won’t be making way as the infrastructure in our country is still not ready to accommodate such vehicles. Speaking about the competition, the Toyota Prius is directly imported as a CBU, incurring high costs. With CKD import of the Ioniq, Hyundai could easily undercut the Prius’ pricing, leading to increased sales.

6. Hyundai Family Hatch (Santro)

Expected launch - October 2018

The famous Santro nameplate is returning to the country, most probably by the second half next year. The all new Santro will be a radical departure from its tall boy design earlier. The latest one looks far beefier and exhibits contemporary styling compared to the last generation of the Santros. The stylish hatch will sit in between the entry-level Eon and the Grand i10. As per reports, the new Santro is likely to be offered with a choice of two petrol motors and will be replacing the i10 in India.

7. Hyundai Carlino

Expected launch – October 2019

Showcased at last year’s Indian Auto Expo, the Hyundai Carlino concept is a sub-4m compact SUV. It is likely to boast the Elite i20’s 1.4-litre diesel engine. In order to take on the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, the compact SUV is likely to feature the carmaker’s ISG (Intelligent Stop & Go), Blue Drive technology, which will help it bump the mileage figures of the SUV. This technology automatically stops the engine at idling and returns it back to life as soon as the driver hits the clutch. This helps in saving fuel by 15 per cent.
