Tata Tiago waiting period extended to three months

New Delhi: Launched just recently in April 2016, the Tata Tiago has had an overwhelming reception, which led to more than 22,000 bookings, within just three months, since launch. The huge reception and recognition for the Tiago has made Tata very happy and put the Indian carmaker right on top of sales charts. However, it has also led to prolonged waiting periods for the hatchback.   Currently, the waiting period is observed to be a flat three months. However, the base trims will take only a nine week waiting period, as they will have only AC and power steering as additional equipment. The top-spec models, with higher level of equipment, take a full three month waiting period.   Similarly, NGT’s ban on diesel powertrains over 2.0-litres in Delhi and negative sentiments on diesel engines is reflected through the 80 percent sale of petrol engines vis-à-vis diesel engines. Out of the 22,000 plus bookings, 80 percent of them have been for petrol engines, while only 20 percent of diesel engine sales have been reported. Tata has been left with over 23000 bookings to be delivered. Hence, the waiting period has been extended to three months for the Tiago.   Competing with the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Celerio, Hyundai Grand i10 and the Chevrolet Beat, the Tata Tiago boasts of the lowest price among them all. Priced aggressively at Rs. 3.20 lakh, the top-spec variant is priced at Rs. 5.54 lakh (ex-showroom prices, Delhi).   The Tiago has been a great success for Tata that it has regained Tata’s position on the top three spots on the sales charts. The Indian carmaker clinched the third spot on the FY2017 Q1 sales charts. The Tiago sold over a 4205 units in June, which meant that the Tata breached 4000 unit sales, after a two year gap. Despite its success, the Tiago has to perform even better than its rivals to secure the top most rank.   The Tiago has the Revotron petrol engine and the Revotorq diesel mills under the hood. The former 1.2-litre mill generates 83.8 hp at 6000 rpm and 114 Nm of torque at 3500 rpm, while the latter 1.05-litre three-cylinder engine churns out 69 hp at 4000 rpm and 140 Nm of torque at 1800-3000 rpm.
