Nexon is expected to undercut Brezza and EcoSport on the price chart. Check out all expected details like price, features and specifications below
Tata Motors is likely to launch the Nexon compact SUV in the third quarter of 2017. The Nexon is Tata’s first attempt at making a sub-4 metre SUV and will compete with fierce rivals such as the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, the Ford EcoSport and Mahindra’s TUV300 and Nuvosport among others. Among the four compact SUVs listed here, the Brezza and the EcoSport have managed to capture maximum attention of car buyers.
Price Range (ex-showroom)
Tata Nexon (expected)
Rs 7 lakh to Rs 10 lakh
Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza
Rs 7.2 lakh to Rs 9.9 lakh
Rs 7.1 lakh to Rs 10.7 lakh
Although the Nexon shares its platform with the Tata Zest and the Tata Bolt, the compact SUV is definitely more striking and modern than the latter. Tata first showcased the Nexon in its concept form at the 2014 Auto Expo. Two years later, Tata unveiled the production-ready version of the compact SUV at the 2016 Auto Expo. This version was received well by potential car buyers. Later at this year’s Geneva Motor Show, the homegrown carmaker showcased the Nexon Geneva Edition which featured premium cosmetic upgrades. Check out the Tata Nexon Geneva Edition here.
MS Vitara Brezza
Engine displacement (petrol)
1.0-litre / 1.5-litre
Engine displacement (diesel)
L x W x H (mm)
3995 x 1811.4 x 1607
3995 x 1790 x 1640
3999 x 1765 x 1708
The Nexon will draw power from turbocharged petrol and diesel engines. The engines are familiar. The diesel engine in the Nexon is expected be a 4-cylinder version of the 1.05-litre diesel that powers the Tata Tigor and the Tata Tiago. The petrol engine will also be the same 1.2-litre unit of the Tiago/Tigor, but will be turbocharged to produce more power. Both the engines are expected to deliver more than 100PS of power. That should make the Nexon one of the more powerful compact SUVs in its segment.
As far as features are concerned, the Nexon could be loaded to the gills. With the Tigor, Tata managed to put in a lot of equipment while still keeping the price in check. The Nexon too should get features like projector headlamps, ConnectNext touchscreen infotainment system, climate control, etc. Safety features like ABS and dual front airbags will also make it to the list, but it remains to be seen if Tata makes them standard across the Nexon range or not.
As we mentioned before, the Nexon will be Tata’s first compact SUV. With Indian car buyers gravitating towards compact SUVs rather than sedans or hatchbacks in the last couple of years, the Nexon, if it succeeds, could prove to be a game changer for Tata.
