The lighter, wider, lower and meaner 2018 Accord packs the latest tech from the Japanese automaker along with all-new powertrain options!

The tenth-generation Honda Accord made its world debut in Detroit, USA recently. It packs a ground-up design, a pair of turbocharged engines and an updated hybrid powertrain along with additional features. The 2018 Accord is set to go on sale in the US market by the end of the year, while its Indian debut is expected in 2019. Here’s what we know about the 2018 Honda Accord so far.

Design and Features

As expected, the new Accord features a fastback-like roofline similar to the tenth-gen Civic. It looks nothing like the ninth-gen model it will be replacing soon. The sweeping roofline and the window line seem to be inspired from the current Civic (possibly India-bound)

Like most new cars launched these days, the 2018 Accord gets a relatively low bonnet with a more upright fascia when compared to the outgoing model. The centre portion of the bonnet is raised and accentuates the hunkered down look of the new sedan.

Honda’s signature wing grille extends across the width of the new sedan. Like the outgoing ninth-gen facelift model, it features full-LED headlamps (a total of nine-lamps) along with LED fog lights. The 2018 Accord's grille is now a single unit and there’s no two-part grille like the outgoing model.

At the side, there’s a deep sculpted body line which bends as it nears either ends of the car. This line emphasises its coupe-like silhouette and hunkered down nose. The rear gets boomerang-shaped LED tail lamps.

When compared to the outgoing model, the 2018 Accord’s overall length and height have gown down marginally by nearly 10mm and 15mm, respectively. However, there’s substantial increment in its wheelbase (nearly 56mm). All of this has certainly resulted in what the Japanese automaker is touting as ‘classic Honda design principles, such as a low and wide body, expansive visibility and sporty seating position’.

The dashboard sits relatively low and the centre console is highlighted by an 8-inch free-floating touchscreen infotainment unit which features a new user interface and physical volume and tuner buttons. It also offers support for both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto like the current model.

The infotainment system can be coupled to a 10-speaker system which delivers 450 watts. The instrument cluster features a 7-inch TFT display, so there’s are no dual displays like the outgoing model.

The redesigned front seats feature taller shoulder bolstering and high-accuracy seat padding with variable firmness for improved seating comfort and support. The driver seat is 12-way power adjustable with height-adjustable lumbar support.

Engine and Transmission

The 2018 Accord will be available with two brand new downsized turbocharged petrol engines and Honda’s third-gen two-motor hybrid powertrain system in the Accord Hybrid. It is based on the new Civic's platform and is lighter by up to 80kg.

The 2018 Accord range starts with a 1.5-litre dual VTC (variable timing control) turbocharged motor  which made its debut in the Civic. It puts out 194PS and 260Nm and replaces the 2.4-litre naturally-aspirated engine.

The range-topping 2.0-litre i-VTEC turbo engine is again borrowed from the Civic Type-R hot hatch. This engine produces 255PS and 370Nm and replaces the famed 3.5-litre naturally-aspirated V6 petrol motor.

While a 6-speed manual is standard, the 1.5-litre is available with a CVT (Continuous Variable Transmission). The 2.0-litre Accord can be paired with the first 10-speed automatic gearbox to feature in a front wheel drive car.

The Accord Hybrid (check out the image above), which will most likely be the only version to make its way to India, gets an updated third-gen two-motor hybrid powertrain. The outgoing model, which is currently on sale here, gets the second-gen hybrid powertrain. Honda has highlighted that the battery pack and intelligent power unit (IPU) are now mounted under the rear floor instead of the boot. This configuration has resulted in identical boot space when compared to the non-hybrid model and 60:40 split-folding rear seats to increase the capacity when needed.
